About the Interest Group
The Heavy Equipment Industries Interest Group focuses on the application of statistical science in large-scale, capital-intensive, and engineering-driven industries. These sectors involve multistage manufacturing, high-precision operations, long lifecycle systems, and increasing use of sensing, automation, and digital technologies.
Purpose
The purpose of this Interest Group is to foster collaboration and professional exchange among researchers and practitioners who use statistics in heavy equipment and advanced manufacturing environments. The group supports research, methodology, education, and outreach in data-driven industrial systems.
Scope
- Promote statistical thinking and methodology in industries such as shipbuilding, semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace, and energy systems.
- Advance research on multistage, hierarchical, and spatial-temporal process modeling relevant to heavy and precision manufacturing.
- Support innovation in reliability, lifecycle performance, predictive maintenance, and risk management for complex long-lived systems.
- Encourage the integration of statistical methods with smart factories, smart yards, IoT-enabled monitoring, digital twins, and AI-assisted decision systems.
- Foster collaboration among statisticians, engineers, data scientists, and industry practitioners.
